Quality Assessment of Various Bottled Water Marketed in Algeria: Health-Related Effects
(Annals of R.S.C.B., 2021-05-08) Wahiba Bencheikh*1, 2,3 and .4; Zhor Hattab; Yamina Berredjem; Louis J; Lopes
Forty-two different brands between mineral & spring waters were purchased from varied markets in Algeria, they analyzed for their bacteriological quality & chemical major elements. The results showed that all the brands presented good bacteriological quality (Absence of E. coli, Total coliforms, Ps. aerugenosa, enterococci & anaerobic spores). Piper diagram shown that (76.19%) of the samples were classified as Earth Alkaline water, where (80%) of them belong to dominant 𝐻𝐶𝑂3−. By comparing the results with the WHO standards we found that only (16.67%) of the brands are compliant with the standards: Ain Bouglez, Righia, &Besbassa as spring waters, Texanna, El Goléa, Salsabil&Lalla Khadidja as mineral waters, those last two they have not enough TDS to consider them as mineral waters like mentioned in their labels, which confirmed by dendrogram classification. Otherwise, whenthe results comparewith the Algerian standards, all the brand waters turned to be compliant with them except for Arwa. Consumers must be very wary about the consumption of bottled water, especially if they already have health issues because they cannot make a choice only from the labels which are mostly different from the real chemical composition.

Groundwater Quality Evaluation (Four boreholes from the region of Tebessa - Algeria)
(Annals of R.S.C.B., 2021-12-15) Khedidja Touahria; Yamina Berredjem; Fethi Baali; Soraya Touahria; Samoun Fatah; Abdelhak Gheid
Tebessa is located in the north-eastern of Algeria. It has a semi-arid climate with a water balance deficit. Groundwater is a significant source for drinking water supply and irrigation of agricultural land in many parts of this area. The water quality depends on the geological influence and anthropogenic pollution. Continuously increasing abstraction of groundwater resources to meet rising agricultural and domestic needs leads to a growing deficit of water. The intensive exploitation of the available water resources, coupled with periods of drought, has led to lowering of the water table and increasing the risk of degradation of water quality, especially when abstraction amounts greatly exceed the natural recharge of aquifers. The study of the physicochemical water quality of four boreholes of Tebessa shows that the waters studied are of the same hydro-chemical facies (calcium sulphate). The results of the physicochemical analyses are compared with national and international standards. In addition The Groundwater Quality Evaluation System (Groundwater - QES) is used to classify the waters studied depending on the quality and suitability for the production of drinking water.

Removal of Basic Fuchsin from water by using mussel powdered eggshell membrane as novel bioadsorbent: Equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies
(Elsevier, 2020-04-08) Wahiba Bessashia; Yamina Berredjem; Zhour Hattab; Mohamed Bououdina
This study aims to remove organic cationic dye Basic Fuchsin (BF) by adsorption onto a low cost eggshell membrane (ESM) in batch mode at 293 K. XRD analysis confirms the amorphous nature of ESM meanwhile FTIR spectroscopy reveals the presence of several functional groups such as hydroxyl (–OH), sulfhydryl (–SH), carboxyl (–COOH), and amino (–NH2). Morphological observations by SEM indicate its fibrous microstructure. BET analysis shows a surface area of 11.56 m2 g−1 and the presence of mesopores with a volume of 6.173 10−3 cm3 g−1. The value of pHPZC of ESM is 7.05. The influence of adsorbent dose, contact time, pH, temperature and dye concentration is examined. The highest adsorption capacity around 48 mg.g−1is achieved for a dye concentration 250 ppm, pH 6 and 25 °C. In addition, adsorption has been found to follow pseudo-second order kinetics. The analysis of the experimental data using linear forms based on Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models indicate that the best fit is obtained with Freundlich model. Thermodynamic parameters (Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy) reveal that the adsorption of BF onto ESM is an exothermic and spontaneous process. A comprehensive mechanism for BF adsorption by ESM has been proposed.
