Abstract

Abstract This memo explores the image of Algeria during the first half of the 18th century as depicted by the German traveler Johann Ernst Hanbstängl in his book. His journey is considered an important source for understanding the conditions of Algeria during the Ottoman era, particularly under the rule of the Deys. The study includes a brief overview of the traveler’s life and the route of his journey, along with an analysis of the content of his book. It examines various aspects he addressed, starting with the historical and geographical context, followed by the political and administrative conditions of that period. The study highlights the strict military organization that characterized the country's administration at the time, and provides a detailed description of social and economic life. It also considers the cultural and religious dimensions, conveying the traveler’s personal impressions and observations about the features that caught his attention or surprised him during his stay in the Regency of Algiers. ---------------------------------------- ملخص تتناول هذه المذكرة صورة الجزائر خلال النصف الأول من القرن الثامن عشر كما نقلها الرحالة الألماني جوهان أرنست هابنسترايت في كتابه، إذ تُعدّ رحلته من المصادر الهامة لفهم أوضاع البلاد الجزائرية خلال العهد العثماني، وبخاصة في فترة حكم الدايات. وقد تضمّنت الدراسة عرضاً موجزاً لحياة الرحالة ومسار رحلته، إلى جانب تحليل لمحتوى كتابه. كما تطرقت إلى مختلف الجوانب التي تناولها، بدءاً من السياق التاريخي والجغرافي، مروراً بالأوضاع السياسية والإدارية في تلك الحقبة، كما أبرزت صرامة التنظيم العسكري الذي ميز الإدارة العسكرية للبلاد في تلك الفترة، وصولاً إلى وصف دقيق للحياة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية. ولم تغفل الدراسة الجانب الثقافي والديني، حيث نقل الرحالة انطباعاته وملاحظاته الشخصية حول ما صادفه من مظاهر لفتت انتباهه أو أثارت دهشته داخل إيالة الجزائر. -------------------------------------- Résumé Ce mémoire traite de l'image de l'Algérie durant la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle telle que présentée par le voyageur allemand Johann Ernst Hanfstängl dans son ouvrage. Son voyage constitue l'une des sources importantes pour comprendre la situation du pays algérien pendant la période ottomane, en particulier sous le règne des Deys. L'étude comprend une brève présentation de la vie du voyageur et de l'itinéraire de son voyage, ainsi qu'une analyse du contenu de son livre. Elle aborde également les différents aspects évoqués dans son récit, à commencer par le contexte historique et géographique, en passant par les conditions politiques et administratives de l'époque. Elle met en lumière la rigueur de l'organisation militaire qui caractérisait l'administration du pays à cette période, jusqu'à une description précise de la vie sociale et économique. L'étude n'a pas non plus négligé les dimensions culturelle et religieuse, le voyageur ayant rapporté ses impressions et observations personnelles sur les aspects qui ont attiré son attention ou suscité son étonnement au sein de la Régence d'Alger.
