Abstract

Summary This study presents an analysis of the image of Algeria as portrayed by the French traveler Jean-André Peyssonnel in his book Journey to the Regency of Algiers. This work is considered one of the most important travel accounts documenting European observations of Algeria during the Ottoman era, specifically under the rule of the Deys. The study aims to understand the traveler’s perception of Algerian reality in its various dimensions. It includes a brief biography of the author and the context of his journey, as well as an overview of the books structure and content. Additionally, the study provides a general overview of Algeria’s geography and history, highlighting the key factors that shaped the country’s identity, such as its location, borders, and topography. It also explores the political and military life in Algeria during the studied period, presenting Peyssonnel’s views on governance in the regency and the organization of the Janissary army, while comparing them with other historical sources. Finally, the study examines the social, cultural, and religious aspects observed by the author, shedding light on his orientalist perspective. ---------------------------- ملخص تناولت هذه الدراسة تحليلا لصورة الجزائر، كما رسمها الرحالة الفرنسي جون اندري بيسونال، في كتابه رحلة الى ايالة الجزائر اذ يعتبر هذا الاخير من بين اهم النصوص الرحلية التي وثقت مشاهدات الاوروبيين للجزائر خلال العهد العثماني، وتحديدا في فترة حكم الدايات؛ حيث تهدف هذه الدراسة الى فهم الرحالة للواقع الجزائري في مختلف جوانبه؛ اذ تم تقديم في هذه الدراسة ترجمة موجزة لحياة الكاتب وظروف رحلته مع التعريف بالكتاب من حيث بنائه ومحتواه، كذلك تم تقديم لمحة عامة عن الجزائر من حيث الجغرافيا والتاريخ والتركيز على العوامل التي شكلت ملامح البلاد من موقع وحدود وتضاريس، اضافة للإشارة الى الحياة السياسية والعسكرية في الجزائر خلال الفترة المدروسة مع عرض وجهات نظر بيسونال للحكم في الايالة وتنظيمات الجيش الإنكشاري في الجزائر ومقارنتها بمصادر اخرى، كما تناولت الابعاد الاجتماعية والثقافية والدينية التي رصدها الكاتب في رحلته وعرض نظرته الاستشراقية. ------------------------------- Résumé : Cette étude propose une analyse de l’image de l’Algérie telle qu’ elle a été décrite par le voyageur français jean André Pyssonnel dans son ouvrage voyage a la régence d’Alger, ce texte figure parmi les récits de voyage les plus importants ayant consigné les observation des Européens sur l’Algérie à l’époque ottomane, en particulier durant la période du règne des deys, l’objectif de cette recherche est de comprendre la perception du voyageur à l’égard de la réalité algérienne dans ses diverses dimensions. L’étude commence par une brève présentation de la vie de l’auteur et des circonstances entourant son livre, elle offre également un aperçu général de l’Algérie sur les facteurs ayant façonne l’identité du pays. Par ailleurs, la recherche examine la vie politique et militaire durant la période étudiée à travers le regarde de Pyssonnel, en confrontant ou les divergences notamment en ce qui concerne le pouvoir en place et l’organisation de l’armé. Enfin, l’étude aborde les dimensions sociales culturelles et religieuses décrites dans le récit, tout en mettant en lumière la vision orientaliste de l’auteure.
