Exploring the Role of Note-Taking in Enhancing Students Engagement in Online Learning

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to investigate the role of note-taking in enhancing student engagement in online learning among first-year Master students in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. The research seeks to examine how note-taking can help students improve their attention, participation, comprehension, and interaction during online classes. It also aims to identify the main challenges students face while taking notes in virtual learning environments and how these challenges may affect their engagement and learning process. The research questions investigate the extent to which note-taking contributes to increasing students’ engagement and improving their online learning experience. The study hypothesizes that effective note-taking positively affects students’ engagement by helping them become more focused, active, and organized during online classes. Quantitative methods, including a questionnaire, are conducted among first-year Master students of English at Mohamed Cherif Messaadia University. This study presents an opportunity to highlight the importance of note-taking as an effective learning strategy in online education without neglecting the essential role of teachers and classroom interaction. Depending on the findings, useful recommendations and suggestions may be provided for both teachers and students to improve online learning practices and encourage the use of effective note-taking strategies in EFL classes -------------------------- الملخص تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف دور تدوين الملاحظات في تعزيز اندماج طلبة السنة الأولى ماستر في التعلم عبر الإنترنت لدى طلبة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. وتسعى إلى الكشف عن مدى مساهمة تدوين الملاحظات في تحسين انتباه الطلبة ومشاركتهم وفهمهم وتفاعلهم أثناء الدروس الإلكترونية. كما تهدف الدراسة إلى تحديد أبرز الصعوبات التي يواجهها الطلبة أثناء تدوين الملاحظات في بيئات التعلم الافتراضية، ومدى تأثير هذه الصعوبات على اندماجهم ومسار تعلمهم. وتتمحور إشكالية الدراسة حول مدى إسهام تدوين الملاحظات في رفع مستوى اندماج الطلبة وتحسين تجربتهم في التعلم عبر الإنترنت. وتنطلق الدراسة من فرضية مفادها أن التدوين الفعّال للملاحظات يساهم إيجابيًا في تعزيز اندماج الطلبة من خلال مساعدتهم على أن يصبحوا أكثر تركيزًا وتفاعلًا وتنظيمًا أثناء الحصص الإلكترونية. واعتمدت الدراسة على المنهج الكمي، وذلك من خلال استخدام استبيان وُجّه إلى طلبة السنة الأولى ماستر تخصص لغة إنجليزية بجامعة محمد الشريف مساعدية. وتمثل هذه الدراسة فرصة لإبراز أهمية تدوين الملاحظات باعتبارها استراتيجية تعلم فعّالة في التعليم عبر الإنترنت، دون إغفال الدور الأساسي للأستاذ والتفاعل الصفي. وبناءً على النتائج المتوصل إليها، يمكن تقديم مجموعة من التوصيات والاقتراحات التي من شأنها المساهمة في تحسين ممارسات التعلم عبر الإنترنت وتشجيع اعتماد استراتيجيات فعّالة لتدوين الملاحظات في أقسام الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. --------------------- Résumé Cette étude vise à explorer le rôle de la prise de notes dans l’amélioration de l’engagement des étudiants dans l’apprentissage en ligne chez les étudiants de première année Master en ALE. La recherche cherche à examiner comment la prise de notes peut aider les étudiants à améliorer leur attention, leur participation, leur compréhension et leur interaction pendant les cours en ligne. Elle vise également à identifier les principales difficultés auxquelles les étudiants sont confrontés lors de la prise de notes dans les environnements d’apprentissage virtuels et la manière dont ces difficultés peuvent affecter leur engagement et leur processus d’apprentissage. Les questions de recherche examinent dans quelle mesure la prise de notes contribue à accroître l’engagement des étudiants et à améliorer leur expérience d’apprentissage en ligne. L’étude émet l’hypothèse qu’une prise de notes efficace influence positivement l’engagement des étudiants en les aidant à devenir plus concentrés, actifs et organisés pendant les cours en ligne. Des méthodes quantitatives, notamment un questionnaire, ont été menées auprès des étudiants de première année Master d’anglais à l’Université Mohamed Cherif Messaadia. Cette étude représente une opportunité de mettre en évidence l’importance de la prise de notes comme stratégie d’apprentissage efficace dans l’enseignement en ligne, sans négliger le rôle essentiel des enseignants et de l’interaction en classe. Selon les résultats obtenus, des recommandations et des suggestions utiles pourront être proposées aux enseignants et aux étudiants afin d’améliorer les pratiques d’apprentissage en ligne et d’encourager l’utilisation de stratégies efficaces de prise de notes dans les classes d’ALE.
