The Impact of The Teacher Pygmalion Effect on EFL learners’ oral performance Case of: Third Year LMD Students of English at the University of Souk-Ahras.

Abstract

Abstract One of the major responsibilities of any teacher is to enable student to perform effectively through oral language .The aim behind this research study is to investigate and clarify how teachers expectation influence the learners performance. In order to achieve this study we used exploratory sequential mixed method as an approach to combining qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis in a sequence of phases (two-phase design). In the first phase, the researcher has collected qualitative data and then analyzes the data. Next, quantitative phase which is a questionnaire and an interview as form of qualitative data collection. In this study, the population consists of EFL third year bachelor classes at the University of Mohamed Cherif Messaadia at Souk-Ahras, in the academic year 2022-2023. The students that make the sample represent 40 students. In the end of the study, our first hypothesis were confirmed which is Pygmalion effect can influence positively the EFL learners’ oral performance by giving them more confidence in their capacities. As a result, our study demonstrates that the learners’ capacity to perform effectively is greatly influenced by teacher’s positive expectation like eliminating anxiety, raising students’ motivation level and giving them more self confidence. -------------------- الملخص إن إحدى أهم المسؤوليات التي تقع على عاتق الأستاذ تمكين الطالب من الأداء و الإلقاء بطلاقة عن الطريق الاستعمال الشفهي للغة، هذا البحث يهدف إلي توضيح تأثير توقعات الأستاذ على الأداء و الإلقاء الشفهي لطالب. للقيام بهذا البحث ، قمنا بعمل استفسار للطلبة و مقابلة مع أساتذة علي مستوى جامعة محمد الشريف مساعديه.من خلال النتائج التي تم الحصول عليها ، لقد تم تأكيد فرضيتنا الأولى التي تقول أن توقعات الأستاذ تؤثر ايجابيا على الأداء الشفهي للطالب من خلال منحه ثقة في نفسه. في الأخير ان التوقع الايجابي للأستاذ له تأثير كبير على الطالب وهذا يتضح في العديد من الأشكال تم ذكرها سابقا --------------------

Résumé L’une des premières responsabilités de chaque enseignant est de qualifier l’étudiant de performer effectivement oralement .Le but derrière cette recherche est de clarifier comment l’expectation du l’enseignant s’influence sur la performance orale de l’étudiant. Pour atteindre cet objectif de cette recherche ,on a utilise une méthodologie qui est une combinaison entre une interview avec les enseignants de la langue anglaise au niveau du l’université de Mohamed Cherif Messaadia ,et un questionnaire avec les étudiant de troisième année licence de la langue anglaise au niveau de la même université .A travers les résultats obtenues ,notre première hypothèse est confirmées qui dit que l’expectation positive de enseignant s’influence positivement sure la performance oral des étudiants à travers lui donnés une grande confiance concernant leurs capacités .Pour conclure, l’effet pygmalion de l’enseignant a une grande influence positive sur la performance orale des étudiants.
