The Effect of Mother Tongue Interference on EFL Learners’ Writing Productions Case Study First Year Students at the Department of English Mohamed Cherif Messaadia University -Souk Ahras

Abstract

Abstract The current research aims to investigate and determine through error analysis the interference of the mother tongue (Arabic) on first year EFL learners writing productions at the department of English, Mohamed Cherif Messadia University, Souk Ahras. This study seeks to investigate to what extent can the mother tongue interference affect ELF learners writing productions. So as to confirm or reject the hypothesis, which states that the mother tongue interference brings about many writing errors, leading to poor productions, and that it can be the major cause of them, the mixed methods was adopted. Data were collected through a questionnaire and a written test administered to 45 students so as to examine their views and attitudes towards the negative influence of the native language. The research results revealed that the types of errors found can be categorized into interlingual and intralingual errors, and the negative interference of the native language is one of the main causes of students’ errors that occur at different levels of the language components. Hence, in the light of these findings, the hypothesis was confirmed. ------------------- الملخص تهدف هذه الدراسة من خلال تحليل الأخطاء إلى التحقق من وتحديد مدى تدخل اللغة الأم (العربية) في الإنتاج الكتابي لطلبة السنة الأولى للغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية بجامعة محمد الشريف مساعدية’ سوق أهراس. تسعى هذه الدراسة للإجابة على سؤال البحث التالي: إلى أي مدى يمكن أن يؤثر تدخل اللغة الأم على الإنتاج الكتابي لمتعلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. من أجل تأكيد الفرضية أو رفضها؛ والتي تنص على أن تدخل اللغة الأم يتسبب في العديد من الأخطاء الكتابية مما يؤدي إلى ضعف نوعية الإنتاج الكتابي بل يمكن أن يكون هو السبب الرئيسي لذلك ٫ تم اعتماد المنهج المزيج. تم جمع البيانات من خلال استبيان واختبار كتابي تم إجراؤه على 45 طالبا لتقصي مواقفهم وآرائهم تجاه التأثير السلبي للغة الأم. كشفت نتائج البحث أن أنواع الأخطاء التي تم العثور عليها يمكن تصنيفها إلى أخطاء بين اللغات وأخرى داخل اللغة وأن التدخل السلبي للغة الأم هو أحد الأسباب الرئيسية لأخطاء الطلبة والتي تحدث على مستويات مختلفة من مكونات اللغة. إذن وعلى ضوء هذه النتائج فإن الفرضية تم تأكيدها. ---------------------------- Résumé La recherche actuelle vise à étudier et à déterminer par l'analyse des erreurs l’interférence de la langue maternelle (arabe) sur les apprenants de première année d'EFL écrivant des productions au département d'anglais, Université Mohamed Cherif Messadia, Souk Ahras. Cette étude vise à répondre à la question de recherche suivante : « Dans quelle mesure l'interférence de la langue maternelle peut-elle affecter les productions d'écriture des apprenants ELF ? ». Afin de confirmer ou d'infirmer l'hypothèse selon laquelle l'interférence de la langue maternelle entraîne de nombreuses erreurs d'écriture, conduisant à de mauvaises productions, et qu'elle peut en être la cause majeure, les méthodes mixtes ont été adoptées. Les données ont été recueillies au moyen d'un questionnaire et d'un test écrit administré à 45 étudiants afin d'examiner leurs points de vue et leurs attitudes à l'égard de l'influence négative de la langue maternelle. Les résultats de la recherche ont révélé que les types d'erreurs trouvées peuvent être classées en erreurs interlinguales et intralinguales, et l'interférence négative de la langue maternelle est l'une des principales causes des erreurs des élèves qui se produisent à différents niveaux des composantes linguistiques. Ainsi, à la lumière de ces résultats, l'hypothèse a été confirmée.
