Exploring Students’ and Teachers’ Perceptions on the Effectiveness of Grammarly Online Writing Assistant in Improving Students’ Spelling Accuracy The Case of Master One EFL Students at Souk Ahras University

Abstract

Abstract The study explores the perceptions of EFL learners and teachers towards the use of Grammarly as an online writing assistant to enhance students' spelling accuracy. It also investigates the extent to which Grammarly software can improve master one EFL students’ spelling accuracy. The study adopted an exploratory research design, in which two data gathering instruments were used, namely a questionnaire to 45 master one students, and an interview with ten (10) conveniently selected EFL teachers. Besides, it utilized a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The findings revealed that both master one EFL students and teachers hold positive perspectives towards the use of Grammarly online writing assistant in improving learners' spelling accuracy in writing. Moreover, it is observed that the use of Grammarly software can significantly enhance learners' spelling accuracy to a high degree, confirming the research hypotheses. Some recommendations are made for the effective implementation of Grammarly in language teaching and learning contexts, aiming to optimize students' spelling acuracy and overall writing skills. ----------------------- الملخص تستكشف الدراسة تصورات متعلمي ومعلمي اللغة اإلنجليزية كلغة أجنبية تجاه استخدام برنامج Grammarlyكمساعد للكتابة عبر اإلنترنت لتحسين دقة إملاء الطالب في الكتابة. كما تحقق الدراسة في مدى التأثير الذي يمكن أن يحققه برنامج Grammarlyفي تحسين دقة إملاء طالب الماستر في اللغة اإلنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. تعتمد الدراسة تصميم بحث استكشافي حيث تم استخدام أدوات تجميع البيانات، وهي استبيان لـ 45طالبا في الماستر ومقابلة مع عشرة ( )10اساتذة لغة إنجليزية مختارين بشكل مالئم. باإلضافة إلى ذلك، تستخدم الدراسة نهجا مختلطا، يجمع بين التحليل النوعي والكمي للبيانات. تظهر النتائج أن كل من طالب الماستر في اللغة اإلنجليزية كلغة أجنبية واساتذتهم يحملون وجهات نظر إيجابية تجاه استخدام برنامج Grammarlyكمساعد للكتابة عبر اإلنترنت لتحسين دقة إملاء الطالب في الكتابة. عالوة على ذلك، يالحظ أن استخدام برنامج Grammarlyيمكن أن يحسن بشكل كبير دقة إملاء الطالب بدرجة عالية، مما يؤكد على فرضيات البحث. بنا ء ً على النتائج، يتم تقديم توصيات لتنفيذ برنامج Grammarlyبشكل فعال في سياقات تدريس وتعلم اللغات، بهدف تحسين مهارة إمالء الطالب ومهاراتهم الكتابية العامة ------------------- Résumé L'étude explore les perceptions des apprenants et des enseignants en anglais en tant que langue étrangère (EFL) sur l'utilisation de GRAMMARLY comme assistant d'écriture en ligne pour améliorer la précision orthographique des étudiants dans leurs écris. Elle examine également dans quelle mesure le logiciel GRAMMARLY aider à améliorer la précision orthographique des étudiants en première année de master en EFL. L'étude adopte une conception de recherche exploratoire, utilisant deux instruments de collecte de données : un questionnaire destiné à 45 étudiants de master 1 et des entretiens e avec dix (10) enseignants d'EFL choisis de manière pratique. Elle utilise aussi une approche mixte, combinant analyses qualitative et quantitative de données . Les résultats révèlent que tant les étudiants de master 1 en EFL que les enseignants ont des perspectives positives sur l'utilisation de GRAMMARLY comme assistant d'écriture en ligne pour renforcer la précision orthographique des apprenants dans leurs production écrites. il est egalment observé que l'utilisation du logiciel GRAMMARLY peut améliorer de manière significativement la précision orthographique des apprenants à un haut niveau , confirmant ainsi les hypothèses de la recherche. A partire de ces résultats, des recommandations sont formulées pour une implémentation efficace de GRAMMARLY dans les contextes d'enseignement et d'apprentissage des langues, A pour objectif d’ameliorer la compétence orthographique des étudiants et leurs capacités génerales en écriture.
