The Role of Classical Music in Enhancing Idea Generation and Writing Flow During the Drafting Stage. The Case of Third Year EFL Bachelor Students at the University of Souk Ahras

Abstract

Abstract The current study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using classical music in improving the writing flow and idea generation during the drafting stage of third-year EFL students at Mohamed Cherif Messaadia University, in Souk-Ahras. In pursuance of this objective, a mixed-method approach was conducted. The quantitative part involved a pre-test and post-test experimental design with one group that randomly selected and it consists of 22 participants, while the qualitative part included semi-structured interviews with 11 students of the same group. Although the study initially hypothesized that classical music would have a positive impact, the findings suggested otherwise. Most students found the classical music distracting rather than helpful, and their writing performance did not show a significant improvement. As a result, the hypothesis was rejected. These results highlight the importance of considering students’ individual preferences and learning environments in case of using background music in academic contexts. To this end, anumber of notable recommendations and suggestions are proposed for further future research ---------------- ملخص تهدف الدراسة الحالية إلى التحقيق في فعالية استخدام الموسيقى الكلاسيكية في تحسين تدفق الكتابة وتوليد الأفكارخلال مرحلة المسودة لطلاب السنة الثالثة في جامعة محمد الشريف مساعدية في سوق أهراس. وتحقيقا لهذا الهدف،تم اتباع نهج متعدد الأساليب. تضمن الجزء الكمي تصميمًا تجريبيًا قبل الاختبار وبعد الاختبار مع مجموعة واحدة تم اختيارها عشوائيًا وتتكون من 22 مشاركًا، بينما تضمن الجزء النوعي مقابلات شبه منظمة مع 11 طالبًا من نفس المجموعة. على الرغم من أن الدراسة افترضت في البداية أن الموسيقى الكلاسيكية سيكون لها تأثير إيجابي، إلا أن النتائج أشارت إلى خلاف ذلك. وجد معظم الطلاب أن الموسيقى الكلاسيكية تشتت الانتباه بدلاً من أن تكون مفيدة، ولم يظهر أداء كتابتهم تحسنًا كبيرًا. نتيجة لذلك، تم رفض الفرضيةفي تفضيلات الطلاب الفردية موسيقى . تُبرز هذه النتائج أهمية مراعاة تفضيلات الطلاب الفردية وبيئات التعلم في حالة استخدام الموسيقى الخلفية في السياقات الأكاديمية. لهذا الغرض، تم اقتراح عدد من التوصيات والاقتراحات البارزة لمزيد من الأبحاث المستقبلية . ---------------- Resumé L'étude actuelle vise à étudier l'efficacité de l'utilisation de la musique classique dans améliorer le flux d'écriture et la génération d'idées dans la phase de rédaction , des étudiants EFL de troisième année à l'Université Mohamed Cherif Messaadia, à Souk-Ahras. Conformément à cet objectif, une approche mixte a été mise en œuvre. La partie quantitative comprenait une conception expérimentale pré-test et post-test avec un groupe sélectionné au hasard et composé de 22 participants, tandis que la partie qualitative comprenait des entretiens semi-structurés avec 11 étudiants du même groupe. Bien que l'étude ait initialement émis l'hypothèse que la musique classique aurait un impact positif, les résultats suggéraient le contraire. La plupart des étudiants ont trouvé la musique classique distrayante plutôt qu'utile, et leur performance d'écriture n'a pas montré d'amélioration significative. En conséquence, l'hypothèse a été rejetée. Ces résultats soulignent l'importance de tenir compte les préférences individuelles et les environnements d'apprentissage des élèves en cas d'utilisation de musique de fond dans des contextes académiques. À cette fin, un nombre de recommandations et de suggestions notables proposées pour de futures recherches.
