The Role of Context in Exploring the Right Meanings of Polysemous Words Case Study: First Year LMD Students at the Department of English University of Mohamed-Cherif Messaadia, Souk-Ahras

Abstract

Abstract The current study aims at investigating the role of context and its effects on identifying the correct meanings of polysemous words for First year EFL students at the department of English, Mohamed-Cherif Messaadia University, Souk-Ahras. To test the main hypothesis of this research that suggests that context or specifically co-text, which is the linguistic environment of a word, plays a significant role in perceiving the right meanings of polysemous words (words with multiple meanings), two instruments were used: an experiment which was conducted on a sample of 18 students chosen randomly from 150 first year students of English, and a questionnaire with the same sample. The gathered data illustrated that first year students of English face difficulties dealing with this kind of words. Yet, the context was of a great help in directing them to the appropriate interpretations of these words and thus to exploring the intended meanings. Based on the results, the hypotheses are confirmed. Hence, this study is a contribution to the field of teaching vocabulary and specifically polysemy as a very useful aspect of language. ------------------------- الملخص تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التعرف على دور السياق و تأثيراته في تحديد المعاني الصحيحة للكلمات متعددة المعاني لطلاب السنة الأولى للغة الانجليزية كلغة أجنبية في قسم اللغة الانجليزية بجامعة محمد الشريف مساعدية ، سوق أهراس. لاختبار الفرضية الرئيسية لهذا البحث والتي تشير إلى أن السياق أو النص اللغوي على وجه التحديد ، و الذي يمثل البيئة اللغوية للكلمة ، يلعب دورا هاما في إدراك المعاني الصحيحة للكلمات متعددة المعاني ، تم استخدام أداتين : التجربة والتي تم إجراؤها على عينة من 18 طالبا تم اختيارهم عشوائيا من أصل 150 طالبا في السنة الأولى للغة الانجليزية ، و أيضا استبيان لنفس العينة . أوضحت البيانات التي تم جمعها أن طلاب السنة الأولى يواجهون صعوبات في التعامل مع هذا النوع من الكلمات. و مع ذلك، كان السياق مفيدا جدا في توجيههم إلى التفسيرات المناسبة لهذه الكلمات و بالتالي اكتشاف المعاني المقصودة. بناءا على النتائج تم تأكيد الفرضيات. و عليه فان هذه الدراسة هي مساهمة في مجال تدريس المفردات و تعدد المعاني على وجه التحديد باعتبارها جانبا أساسيا في اللغة. ----------------------- Résumé La présente étude vise à étudier le rôle du contexte et ses effets sur l’indentification des significations corrects des mots polysémiques pour les étudiants de la première année Anglais Langue Etrangère du département d’anglais à l’Université Mohamed-Cherif Messaadia-Souk Ahras. Pour tester l’hypothèse principale de cette recherche qui suggère que le contexte ou plus précisément le co-texte, qui est l’environnement linguistique d’un mot, joue un rôle significatif dans la perception des bons sens des mots polysémiques (mots à sens multiples), deux instruments ont été utilisés : une expérience qui a été menée sur un échantillon de 18 étudiants choisis au hasard parmi 150 étudiants de première année d’anglais, et un questionnaire auprès du même échantillon. Les données recueillies ont montré que les étudiants de première année d’anglais ont des difficultés à gérer ce type de mots. Pourtant, le contexte a été d’une grande aide pour les orienter vers les interprétations appropriées de ces mots et donc pour explorer les significations voulues. Sur la base des résultats, les hypothèses sont confirmées. Par conséquent, cette étude est une contribution au domaine de l’enseignement du vocabulaire et plus particulièrement de la polysémie en tant qu’aspect très utile du langage.
