Investigating the Role of Self-Editing Techniques in Enhancing the Writing Skills of English as a Foreign Language Case of: Second Year LMD Students of English at the University of Souk-Ahras

Abstract

Abstract Writing effectively requires more than just the ability to generate ideas and express them coherently. It also involves the capacity to revise, edit, and refine one‘s work. Self-editing, which is the process of reviewing and improving one‘s own writing, is a crucial element of the writing process. Nevertheless, it is often neglected, particularly by inexperienced writers, despite its significance. The current study aims to investigate the role of self-editing techniques in enhancing the writing skills of EFL students at Mouhamed Cherif Messaadia University in Souk Ahras. The study used two research tools, a student questionnaire and teacher’s structured interview. The qualitative and quantitative results indicate that students acknowledge the significance of self-editing in minimizing errors in their written work, and that it contributes to creating high-quality texts over time and fosters learner independence. Furthermore, the findings corroborate the research hypothesis that self-editing techniques are effective in improving students‘ writing skills. Therefore, students should be educated about these techniques and how to use them effectively. ---------------------------- ملخص الكتابة الصحيحة لا تقتصر فقط على القدرة على انتاج الافكار و التعبير عنها بشكل منسجم بل تشمل ايضا مراجعة وتحرير وتحسين عملنا . ويعدّ التحرير الذاتي، والذي يتمثل في مراجعة وتحسين الكتابة الخاصة بالفرد ، عنصراً مهما في هذه العملية. ومع ذلك، فإنه غالب اً ما يتم تجاهله، ولا سيما من قبل الكتاّب عديمي الخبرة على الرغم من أهميته.تم إجراء الدراسة للتحقق من دور تقنيات التحرير الذاتي في تعزيز مهارات الكتابة لدى طلاب جامعة محمد الشريف مساعدية في سوق أهراس. استخدمت الدراسة استبيان اللغة الانجليزية كلغة اجنبية في للطلاب و مقابلات منظمة للأساتذة.وتشير النتائج النوعية والكمية إلى أن الطلاب يدركون أهمية التحرير الذاتي في تقليل الأخطاء في عملهم الكتابي، وأنه يساهم في إنشاء نصوص عالية الجودة مع مرور الوقت ويعزز استقلالية المتعلمين. وعلاوة على ذلك ،فان النتائج تؤكد فرضية البحث التي تنص على أن تقنيات التحرير الذاتي فعالة في تحسين مهارات الكتابة لدى الطلاب. لذلك، يجب تعليم الطلاب هذه التقنيات، وكيفية استخدامها بفعالية إضافة إلى أهميتها. ---------------------- Résumé Écrire efficacement nécessite plus que la simple capacité de générer des idées et de les exprimer de manière cohérente. Cela implique également la capacité de réviser, d'éditer et d'affiner son travail. L‘auto-édition, qui consiste à examiner et à améliorer sa propre écriture, est un élément crucial du processus d‘écriture. Néanmoins, elle est souvent négligée, en particulier par les écrivains inexpérimentés,malgré son importance. L‘étude a été menée pour enquêter sur le rôle des techniques d‘auto-édition dans l‘amélioration des compétences en écriture des étudiants en anglais langue étrangère de l‘université Mouhamed Cherif Messaadia à Souk Ahras. L‘étude a utilisé un questionnaire destiné aux étudiants et des entretiens structurés avec des enseignants. Les résultats qualitatifs et quantitatifs indiquent que les étudiants reconnaissent l‘importance de l‘auto-édition pour réduire les erreurs dans leur travail écrit, et que cela contribue à créer des textes de haute qualité au fil du temps et favorise l‘indépendance des apprenants. De plus, les résultats confirment l‘hypothèse de recherche selon laquelle les techniques d‘auto-édition sont efficaces pour améliorer les compétences en écriture des étudiants. Par conséquent, les étudiants devraient être sensibilisés à ces techniques, à leur utilisation efficace et à leur importance
