The Effect of Grammatical Interference on Students Translation From Arabic to English The Case of Third Year Students of English at Mohamed-Cherif Messaadia University, Souk Ahras

Abstract

Abstract Grammatical interference often poses challenges for EFL learners when translating from their native language to English. This research investigates the effect of grammatical interference on the translation proficiency of third-year LMD students at the Department of English, Mohammed Cherif Messadia University, Souk-Ahras, when translating from Arabic to English. The study aims to test two hypotheses. Firstly, grammatical interference can have a negative effect on students' translation, leading to an increased occurrence of errors. Secondly, grammatical interference can indeed be a significant factor contributing to errors in translation, in addition to the lack of comprehension of the grammar of the target language. To test these hypotheses, three distinct instruments are used: a student questionnaire, a translation test, and a teacher's questionnaire. The student questionnaire aims to explore students' perspectives on the impact of grammatical interference in translation. The translation test is administered to analyze errors committed by students due to grammatical interference. Furthermore, the teacher's questionnaire is distributed to ten teachers from various cities (Souk Ahras, Annaba, Guelma, and Mascara) to gather their professional opinions and insights regarding the effect of grammatical interference on translation. The research results confirm that grammatical interference indeed hurts students' translation, leading to an increased occurrence of errors. Moreover, the results prove that grammatical interference can indeed be a significant factor contributing to errors in translation, in addition to the lack of comprehension of the grammar of the target language. ---------------- الملخص

يهدف هذا البحث إلى التحقق من تأثير النحوي التداخل على كفاءة ترجمة طلاب السنة الثالثة بقسم اللغة الإنجليزية، بجامعة ،ً محمد شريف مساعديه عند الترجمة من العربية إلى الإنجليزية .وقد سعت الدراسة إلى اختبار فرضيتين :أولا ، سوق أهراس ، أن التداخل النحوي يمكن أن يكون له تأثير سلبي على ترجمة الطلاب، مما يؤدي إلى زيادة حدوث أخطاء متكررة، وبالتالي .فإن التداخل النحوي يمكن أن يكون بالفعل عاملا هاما يسهم في حدوث أخطاء؛ وثانيا، عدم فهم قواعد اللغة المستهدف .لاختبار هذه الفرضيات، تم استخدام ثلاث أدوات مميزة: استبيان الطالب، واختبار الترجمة، بالإضافة إلى استبيان المعلم يهدف استبيان الطلاب إلى استكشاف وجهات نظر الطلاب حول تأثير التداخل النحوي في الترجمة. تم إجراء اختبار الترجمة لتحليل الأخطاء التي ارتكبها الطلاب بسبب التداخل النحوي. علاوة على ذلك، تم توزيع استبيان المعلم على عشرة معلمين من مدن مختلفة (سوق أهراس، عنابة، قالمة، ومعسكر) لجمع آرائهم المهنية ورؤاهم فيما يتعلق بتأثير التداخل النحوي على الترجمة أكدت نتائج البحث أن التداخل النحوي يضر بالفعل بترجمة الطلاب، مما يؤدي إلى زيادة حدوث الأخطاء. ويمكن أن يكون التداخل النحوي المثبت بالفعل عاملا مهما يساهم في حدوث أخطاء في الترجمة بالإضافة إلي عدم فهم قواعد اللغة المستهدفة ------------------ Résumé La présente recherche a pour objectif d’étudier l’effet de l’interférence grammaticale sur la compétence en traduction des étudiants de troisième année LMD au Département d’anglais, à l’Université Mohamed Cherif Messaadia, Souk Ahras, lors de la traduction de l’arabe en anglais.L’étude vise à tester deux hypothèses : premièrement, que l’interférence grammaticale pourrait avoir un effet négatif sur la traduction des étudiants, conduisant à une fréquence accrue d’erreurs, et deuxièmement, L’interférence grammaticale pourrait en effet être un facteur important contribuant aux erreurs de traduction, en plus du manque de compréhension de la grammaire de la langue cible. Pour tester ces hypothèses, trois instruments distincts ont été utilisés : un questionnaire étudiant, un test de traduction et un questionnaire enseignant. Le questionnaire destiné aux étudiants vise à explorer les perspectives des étudiants sur l’impact de l’interférence grammaticale dans la traduction. Le test de traduction a été appliqué pour analyser les erreurs commises par les étudiants en raison d’interférences grammaticales. En outre, le questionnaire enseignant a été distribué à dix enseignants de différentes villes (Souk Ahras, Annaba, Guelma et Mascara) pour recueillir leurs opinions professionnelles et leurs idées concernant l’effet de l’interférence grammaticale sur la traduction. Les résultats de la recherche ont confirmé que l’interférence grammaticale nuit effectivement à la traduction des étudiants, entraînant une hausse à commettre des erreurs. Quant à l’interférence grammaticale s’est avérée en effet être un facteur important contribuant aux erreurs de traduction, en plus du manque de compréhension de la grammaire de la langue cible.
