The Impact of Working Memory Capacity on Learning English Vocabulary Case Study: First Year Students at the Department of English Mohamed Cherif Messadia University, Souk Ahras

Abstract

Abstract This study aims at investigating the impact of the working memory capacity on learning English vocabulary in the Department of English at Mohamed Cherif Messadia University, in Souk-Ahras. Working memory is a cognitive system that differs from the other types of memory in the amount of the held information. The following piece of research represents a hybrid, experimental research that used a mixed method to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. Two instruments were used to answer the questions of this study. Both an experiment and a questionnaire were administered to 30 EFL students, who were not chosen randomly from N104 first year English students. The obtained results disinter that the working memory capacity greatly affects learning English vocabulary; however, the use of the mnemonic strategies can increase this capacity, which allows the students to remember more words and enrich their vocabulary. On the basis of these findings, the two hypothesis of this study were confirmed. Thus, training students to use of the mnemonic strategies is highly recommended to overcome the weaknesses of the working memory capacity that can negatively influence the learning vocabulary process. ---------------- الملخص تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التحقق من تأثير سعة الذاكرة العاملة على تعلم مفردات اللغة الإنجليزية في قسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة محمد الشريف مساعدية’ سوق أهراس. إن الذاكرة العاملة هي نظام معرفي يختلف عن أنواع الذاكرة الأخرى من حيث مقدار المعلومات المحفوظة. يمثل البحث التالي بحثًا تجريبيًا هجينًا حيث تم استخدام المنهج المزيج لجمع البيانات الكمية والنوعية. تم استخدام أداتين للإجابة على أسئلة هذه الدراسة إذ تم إجراء كل من التجربة والاستبيان على 30 طالبًا من طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية والذين لم يتم اختيارهم عشوائيًا من طلاب السنة الأولى باللغة الإنجليزية N104. تشير النتائج التي تم الحصول عليها إلى أن سعة الذاكرة العاملة تؤثر بشكل كبير على تعلم مفردات اللغة الإنجليزية و لكن استخدام استراتيجيات الذاكرة يمكن أن يزيد من هذه السعة ، مما يسمح للطلاب بتذكر المزيد من الكلمات وإثراء مفرداتهم. انطلاقا من هذه النتائج’ تم تأكيد فرضيتي هذه الدراسة. وبالتالي ، يوصى بشدة بتدريب الطلاب على استخدام استراتيجيات الذاكرة للتغلب على نقاط الضعف في سعة الذاكرة العاملة والتي يمكن أن تؤثر سلبًا على عملية تعلم المفردات. ---------------- Résumé

Cette étude vise à étudier l'impact de la capacité de la mémoire de travail sur l'apprentissage du vocabulaire anglais dans le département d'anglais de l'Université Mohamed Cherif Messadia, à Souk-Ahras. La mémoire de travail est un système cognitif qui se distingue des autres types de mémoire par la quantité d'informations détenues. La recherche suivante représente une recherche expérimentale hybride qui utilise une méthode mixte pour collecter des données quantitatives et qualitatives. Deux instruments ont été utilisés pour répondre aux questions de cette étude. Une expérience et un questionnaire ont été administrés à 30 étudiants EFL, qui n'ont pas été choisis au hasard parmi les étudiants anglais de première année N104. Les résultats obtenus montrent que la capacité de la mémoire de travail affecte grandement l'apprentissage du vocabulaire anglais ; Cependant, l'utilisation des stratégies mnémoniques peut augmenter cette capacité, ce qui permet aux élèves de se souvenir de plus de mots et d'enrichir leur vocabulaire. Sur la base de ces résultats, les deux hypothèses de cette étude ont été confirmées. Ainsi, la formation des étudiants à utiliser les stratégies mnémoniques est fortement recommandée pour surmonter les faiblesses de la capacité de mémoire de travail qui peuvent influencer négativement le processus d'apprentissage du vocabulaire.
