The Importance of Selecting the Right English Tenses to Obtain Intended Meanings Case Study: First Year Master Students at the Department of English

Abstract

The present research aims at highlighting the importance of selecting the right English tenses in obtaining the intended meanings in English . Tense refers to the grammatical category that locates an action or event in time. In English, there are three primary tenses: past tense, present tense, and future tense. Each of these tenses has four aspects: simple, progressive, perfect, and perfect progressive, which further describe the nature of the action or event in relation to the time in which it occurred. This study is based on the main hypothesis that the improper selection of the English tenses hinders M1 students from communicating the intended meanings. In order to validate or reject this hypothesis, this study invested quantitative and qualitative methods in data collection. The tools used for collecting data were a questionnaire comprised of 20 questions which was administered to fifty students chosen randomly from the whole population of Master one students of English, Department of English, Souk-Ahras University, and a test that was given to a sample of thirty students of the same population. The results obtained from this study showed that students do not master all the twelve English tenses. Moreover, they face difficulties with complex tenses and they get confused when choosing between some tenses that have approximate or similar uses. In addition, students are not fully aware of the significance of selecting the right English tenses to convey the intended meanings. ------------------------- الملخص يهدف البحث الحالي إلى دراسة مدى فاعلية اختيار الأزمنة الصحيحة في اللغة الإنجليزية للحصول على المعاني المقصودة. يشير الزمن إلى الفئة النحوية التي تضع إجراءً أو حدثًا في الوقت المناسب، مما يشير إلى وقت حدوث الإجراء أو الحدث (الماضي)، أو حدوثه (الحاضر)، أو حدوثه (المستقبل). في اللغة الإنجليزية، هناك ثلاثة أزمنة رئيسية: الماضي والحاضر والمستقبل. ولكل من هذه الأزمنة أربعة جوانب: البسيط، والتقدمي، والكمال، والتقدم التام، والتي تصف طبيعة الفعل أو الحدث بالنسبة إلى اللحظة التي حدث فيها. تعتمد هذه الدراسة على الفرضية الرئيسية القائلة بأن الاختيار غير الصحيح لأزمنة اللغة الإنجليزية يمنع طلاب M1 من إيصال المعاني المقصودة. من أجل التحقق من صحة هذه الفرضية، استخدمت هذه الدراسة الأساليب الكمية والنوعية لجمع البيانات. الأدوات المستخدمة لجمع البيانات هي استبيان مكون من 20 سؤالا، موجهة إلى خمسين طالبا تم اختيارهم عشوائيا من مجموع طلاب الماجستير 1 في اللغة الإنجليزية من قسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة سوق أهراس، واختبار تم إجراؤه على عينة من ثلاثين طالبا من نفس السكان. أظهرت نتائج هذه الدراسة أن الطلاب لا يتقنون الأزمنة الاثني عشر في اللغة الإنجليزية. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، فإنهم يواجهون صعوبة في التعامل مع الأزمنة المعقدة ويخلطون بين بعض الأزمنة التي لها استخدامات تقريبية أو مشابهة. علاوة على ذلك، لا يدرك الطلاب تمامًا أهمية اختيار الأزمنة الإنجليزية المناسبة لتوصيل المعاني المقصودة. ---------------------------- Résumé

La présente recherche a pour but d'étudier l'efficacité de la sélection des temps corrects en anglais pour obtenir les significations voulues. Le temps fait référence à la catégorie grammaticale qui situe une action ou un événement dans le temps, en indiquant quand l'action ou l'événement s'est produit (passé), se produit (présent) ou se produira (futur). En anglais, il existe trois temps principaux : le passé, le présent et le futur. Chacun de ces temps a quatre aspects : simple, progressif, parfait et parfait progressif, qui décrivent la nature de l'action ou de l'événement par rapport au moment où il s'est produit. Cette étude repose sur l'hypothèse principale selon laquelle la mauvaise sélection des temps anglais empêche les étudiants de M1 de communiquer les significations voulues. Afin de valider cette hypothèse, cette étude a fait appel à des méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives pour la collecte des données. Les outils utilisés pour la collecte des données sont un questionnaire composé de 20 questions, administré à cinquante étudiants choisis au hasard parmi l'ensemble de la population des étudiants de Master 1 d'anglais du département d'anglais de l'université de Souk-Ahras, et un test effectué auprès d'un échantillon de trente étudiants de la même population. Les résultats de cette étude ont montré que les étudiants ne maîtrisent pas les douze temps de l'anglais. De plus, ils rencontrent des difficultés avec les temps complexes et se trompent entre certains temps qui ont des utilisations approximatives ou similaires. En outre, les étudiants ne sont pas pleinement conscients de l'importance de sélectionner les temps anglais appropriés pour transmettre les significations voulues.
