Long-Term Sustainability of Entrepreneurial Ventures Emerging from Higher Institutions Mohammed Cherif Messaadia University

Abstract

Abstract Higher education institutions have evolved into key hubs for fostering entrepreneurial ventures, leveraging entrepreneurship centers, incubators, and innovation programs—even within specialized fields like English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Despite the growing number of university-born startups, their long-term sustainability remains uncertain, with many struggling to survive beyond early stages due to financial constraints, market competition, and adaptation challenges. This study examines the critical factors influencing the endurance of such ventures, analyzing institutional frameworks, entrepreneurial ecosystems, and case examples—including those in foreign language education—to identify pathways for sustained success. Findings reveal that while universities effectively cultivate entrepreneurial mindsets and provide initial incubation support, a significant "post-incubation gap" hinders long-term viability. Key challenges include limited access to follow-on funding, difficulties transitioning from academic to commercial models, and insufficient ongoing mentorship. Despite these hurdles, university-based entrepreneurs exhibit resilience, adaptability, and innovation-driven strategies. The study concludes that strengthening external funding networks, extending post-incubation support, and enhancing practical commercialization training are essential to bridging the gap between academic incubation and market success. For higher education institutions to maximize their impact, a systemic shift is needed—from launching ventures to fostering enduring entrepreneurial ecosystems through sustained mentorship, industry partnerships, and diversified funding mechanisms.
