The Problem of Translating Polysemous Words from English into Arabic Case of: Third year LMD students at Mohamed Cherif Messaadia University of Souk Ahras

Abstract

Abstract This study delves into the challenges faced by third-year EFL students at Mohamed Cherif Messaadia University in Souk-Ahras when translating polysemous words from English into Arabic. It aims to identify the primary difficulty encountered by these students in the translation process and to examine how cultural and contextual differences impact the translation of polysemous words. Additionally, the study hypothesizes that the main obstacle for these students lies in the selection of the appropriate meaning based on context and suggests that linguistic disparities between English and Arabic may affect word usage in translation. This study will employ a survey and a test to collect data about this topic ------------------- الملخص تستكشف هذه الدراسة التحديات التي يواجهها طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية في السنة الثالثة بجامعة محمد الشريف مساعدية عند ترجمة الكلمات متعددة المعاني من الإنجليزية إلى العربية. وتهدف الدراسة إلى تحديد الصعوبة الرئيسية التي يواجهها هؤلاء الطلاب في عملية الترجمة وفحص كيفية تأثير الإختلافات الثقافية والسياقية على ترجمة الكلمات متعددة المعاني. بالإضافة إلى ذلك, تفترض الدراسة أن العائق الرئيسي لهؤلاء الطلاب يكمن في اختيار المعنى المناسب إستنادا إلى السياق, كما تشير إلى أن الإختلافات اللغوية بين الإنجليزية والعربية قد تؤثر على استخدام الكلمات في الترجمة. ستستخدم هذه الدراسة إستبيانا واختبارا لجمع البيانات حول هذا الموضوع. ------------------- Résumé Cette étude explore les défis rencontrés par les étudiants de troisième année d'anglais langue étrangère à l'université Mohamed Cherif Messaadia de Souk Ahras lors de la traduction de mots polysémiques de l'anglais vers l'arabe. Elle vise à identifier la principale difficulté rencontrée par ces étudiants dans le processus de traduction et à examiner comment les différences culturelles et contextuelles impactent la traduction des mots polysémiques. De plus, l'étude émet l'hypothèse que le principal obstacle pour ces étudiants réside dans la sélection du sens approprié en fonction du contexte et suggère que les disparités linguistiques entre l'anglais et l'arabe peuvent affecter l'utilisation des mots en traduction. Cette étude utilisera une enquête et un test pour collecter des données sur ce sujet
