In the digital age, smartphones have become a significant tool in students’ learning experiences and an essential part of students’ academic and personal lives. This study explores the impact of digital technologies, particularly smartphones, on enhancing reading comprehension among first-year English department students. The research investigates how smartphone applications, influence students’ ability to understand, analyze, and retain textual information. Using a mixed-methods approach, including questionnaires for both students and English teachers, the study examines students’ reading habits, engagement levels, and overall academic performance. Findings suggest that while smartphones provide convenient access to diverse reading materials and interactive learning tools, they may also pose distractions that hinder deep comprehension. The study provides insights into balancing smartphone use for effective learning and suggests strategies to maximize its benefits while minimizing challenges ----------------- الملخص في عصر الرقمنة، أصبحت الهواتف الذكية أداة مهمة في تجارب التعلم لدى الطلاب وجزءًا أساسيًا من حياتهم الأكاديمية والشخصية. تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف تأثير التقنيات الرقمية، ولا سيما الهواتف الذكية، على تعزيز الفهم القرائي لدى طلاب السنة الأولى بقسم اللغة الإنجليزية. تبحث الدراسة في كيفية تأثير تطبيقات الهواتف الذكية على قدرة الطلاب على الفهم، والتحليل، والاحتفاظ بالمعلومات النصية. وباستخدام منهجية تجمع بين الأسلوبين الكمي والنوعي، من خلال استبيانات واختبارات للفهم القرائي، تتناول الدراسة عادات القراءة لدى الطلاب، ومستوى تفاعلهم، وأدائهم الأكاديمي العام. وتشير النتائج إلى أن الهواتف الذكية توفر وصولًا سهلاً إلى مواد قراءة متنوعة وأدوات تعليمية تفاعلية، لكنها قد تشكل في الوقت نفسه مصدر تشتيت يعيق الفهم العميق. تقدم الدراسة رؤى حول كيفية تحقيق التوازن في استخدام الهواتف الذكية لأغراض تعليمية فعالة، وتقترح استراتيجيات لتعظيم فوائدها وتقليل التحديات المرتبطة بها. --------------- Résumé À l’ère du numérique, les smartphones sont devenus un outil important dans l’apprentissage des étudiants et une composante essentielle de leur vie académique et personnelle. Cette étude examine l’impact des technologies numériques, en particulier les smartphones, sur l’amélioration de la compréhension écrite chez les étudiants de première année du département d’anglais. La recherche explore comment les applications mobiles influencent la capacité des étudiants à comprendre, analyser et retenir les informations textuelles. En adoptant une approche mixte, incluant des questionnaires et des évaluations de la compréhension écrite, l’étude analyse les habitudes de lecture des étudiants, leur niveau d'engagement et leurs performances académiques globales. Les résultats indiquent que, bien que les smartphones offrent un accès pratique à une variété de supports de lecture et à des outils d’apprentissage interactifs, ils peuvent également constituer une source de distraction nuisant à une compréhension approfondie. L’étude propose des pistes pour équilibrer l’usage des smartphones à des fins éducatives et suggère des stratégies pour en maximiser les avantages tout en minimisant les inconvénients
