The Impact of Integrating Cultural Materials in EFL Classrooms Case of Second Year LMD Students of English Language at Mohamed-Cherif Messaadia University of Souk-Ahras.

Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to examine the impact of integrating cultural materials in EFL teaching on students' language learning and their cultural awareness. It was conducted among second-year EFL students at Mohamed Cherif Messaadia University in Souk-Ahras, utilizing a mixed-method approach. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 18 open-ended and close-ended questions administered to n49 students selected randomly from a population of N99 students, and a semi-structured interview with six EFL teachers. The findings indicated that integrating cultural materials positively affected students' language learning and cultural awareness. However, some challenges, including time limitations, students' lack of motivation, and the appropriateness and authenticity of materials, were identified. Based on the findings the hypotheses generated were confirmed. Overall, this study contributes to the growing body of research on the importance of integrating cultural materials in EFL teaching. --------------------- ملخص هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى دراسة تأثير دمج المواد الثقافية في تعليم اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية على تعلم الطلاب للغة ووعيهم الثقافي تم إجراء هذه الدراسة على طلاب السنة الثانية في قسم اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية في جامعة محمد الشريف مسعدية في سوق أهراس، باستخدام نهج مختلط في جمع البيانات. تم جمع البيانات من خلال استبيان يتألف من 18 سؤالًا تم توزيعه على 49 طالبًا تم اختيارهم عشوائيًا من إجمالي عدد الطلاب البالغ 99 طالبًا، ومقابلة شبه منظمة مع 6 مدرسين في اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. أشارت النتائج إلى أن دمج المواد الثقافية يؤثر بشكل إيجابي على تعلم اللغة والوعي الثقافي للطلاب. ومع ذلك، تم تحديد بعض التحديات مثل قيود الوقت وقلة الحافز لدى الطلاب وملاءمة وصحة المواد المستخدمة. وبناءً على النتائج، تم تأكيد الفرضيات المقترحة. بشكل عام، تساهم هذه الدراسة في التركيز على أهمية دمج المواد الثقافية في تعليم اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية -------------------- Résumé Cette étude visait à examiner l'impact de l'intégration de matériaux culturels dans l'enseignement de l'anglais langue étrangère sur l'apprentissage linguistique et la sensibilisation culturelle des étudiants. Elle a été menée auprès d'étudiants de deuxième année d'anglais langue étrangère à l'Université Mohamed Cherif Messaadia à Souk-Ahras, en utilisant une approche mixte. Les données ont été collectées à travers un questionnaire composé de 18 questions administré à 49 étudiants sélectionnés au hasard sur une population de 99 étudiants, et une interview semi-structurée avec six enseignants d'anglais langue étrangère. Les résultats ont indiqué que l'intégration de matériaux culturels avait un impact positif sur l'apprentissage linguistique et la sensibilisation culturelle des étudiants. Cependant, certains défis, tels que les contraintes de temps, le manque de motivation des étudiants, ainsi que l'adéquation et l'authenticité des matériaux, ont été identifiés. Sur la base des résultats, les hypothèses générées ont été confirmées. Dans l'ensemble, cette étude contribue au corpus croissant de recherches sur l'importance de l'intégration de matériaux culturels dans l'enseignement de l'anglais langue étrangère.
