Abstract
Abstract
The present study is an attempt to investigate the Algerian primary school textbook
prescribed for grade three “My Book of English”. It aims mainly to describe and
analyze the content of this textbook in terms of its appropriateness for the needs and
objectives of the learners. The researcher employed mixed methods design using two
main research tools: a content analysis and a teachers’ questionnaire. The content
analysis technique is employed to analyze the content presented in the English textbook for
third year Algerian primary schools using Cunningsworth's (1995) checklist including the
textbook’s design and organization, language content, skills, and methodology. The
questionnaire was distributed to English language teachers from different primary
schools to obtain information about their perspectives on various aspects including
appearance/layout,
content,
goals/objectives,
teaching
methodology,
grammar/vocabulary, skills, activities, illustrations, supplementary materials, and
overall evaluation. The findings revealed varying perceptions about the textbook's
effectiveness and suitability for teaching English in Algerian primary schools. While
positive aspects such as content relevance, clarity of illustrations, and inclusion of
useful supplementary materials were noted, there were also areas identified for
improvement, such as alignment with the curriculum, effectiveness in skill
development, and affordability.
